When my symptoms were raging there was no way I could make sense of much, let alone track mental health news as it happened. And when I did, my conspiracy theory symptom and hypochondriac urges would kick in hard, allowing me to distort all I read, translating everything into the worst and darkest manifestation of all my fears in this area.
So, good news, if you'll pardon the pun. This is our little slice of the world, for better or worse. I want you to be able to find it easily if it interests you.
And I want to read YOUR thoughts on this news!
But don't get too caught up in it or overthink what you read. This is why:
You may, and probably will, feel massive passion about what you read here or what you consume elsewhere from media. That is OK and natural. What is not OK is to start connecting dots that don't need connecting or getting yourself full of rage or despair over what you read, when you can't really affect the outcome of any if it. At least not right now.
And there's a secret I am sharing. Feel the passion but keep your main goal as one of healing yourself, foremost in your mind. Get your symptoms controlled, or removed, as I did and have. Once you've attained this stability, reconsider what you read and/or see in mental health news and proceed to make a difference, as a healthy person.
Your passion for change or to help others is good. Being unable to effectively utilize it due to your bipolar disorder is bad. Fix the "at home" problem first, then proceed to take on the rest of the world, if you so desire.
I liken it to the airline instruction of putting the oxygen on your face first, then tending to your child. Your natural response would be to protect your kid. But if you're unconscious, you're of no use to your little one. If he or she is unconscious but you are good (stable) you can then effectively help them.
