Candace Pert describes the science behind mind-body medicine in her book "Molecules of Emotion" She found the biochemical reasons for why we feel like we do, for any reason. I'm not even going to attempt to relay, specifically, what's in this book. Neuropeptides, lymphocytes, hormones, opiate receptors (she not only discovered these receptors that physically enable joy to be felt, but years later, discovered they are in our entire body not just our brains) and so on, are discussed. This one is for those of us out there who want proof, as a scientist understands it, of why we feel like we do and what the neurochemical origin of our feelings is inside of us. The story also contains her life's work in this area; the wonderful discoveries she made that changed the world, or could have, had the powers that be listened to her, and what it means to each of us when we understand our bodies to the level she teaches. Dr. Candace Pert discovered, and proved with scientific instrumentation, that we have the ability to feel joy in every single cell in our bodies! She also discovered that the major systems of the body communicate with one another in order to keep us healthy. She made very important discoveries about the intestines and guts that pertain directly to the bipolar audience. Most of the neurotransmitters, the substances that allow a nerve cell to send a signal from one cell to another, are made in your guts. You will most definitely be sick in the head if you're sick in the guts. (I can lead you to a probiotic that repairs some of that, enabling good mood to resume.) This woman is one of the most intelligent and caring people walking the face of the planet. Read this book and you'll know why. Follow this story and learn some key reasons for why your bipolar may be present and what you can do about it. That's not the book's main focus. But the info is in there if you read with a mind aimed at your illness, as I did. And that last statement is the most important on this page. You not only have to know your enemy, bipolar disorder, to fight it, you also have to know yourself, and I mean in a way you probably have never even considered. With this level of understanding, your subconscious can more effectively help your conscious mind make the necessary decisions to start or stop the habits that will end your illness. This may be more than you can accept right now. It might sound far-fetched. But remember, Candace proved these things in a way that the scientific community had to acknowledge. There can be no tougher crowd to sway than that and they did not make it easy on her. Get this book and learn about yourself. Develop your own inner map for progress, as I did. You can do it!
